Brett Lee Out for First Two Tests Because of Injury

Brett Lee the Australian fast bowler experienced a small tear in an abdominal muscle following last week’s tour game against England Lions in Worcester. He has been ruled out of the first two Tests of the Ashes series and is no guarantee to play thereafter. Lee was forced to withdraw less than 48 hours before Wednesday’s series opener with England here at Sophia Gardens after damaging an abdominal muscle in his left side. In 16 years it is only the second time I have pulled a muscle in my body, which is pretty unbelievable for a fast bowler.

brett_leeThe injury has severely disrupted Australia’s plans to attack England with reverse swing, and forced a major rethink of their bowling on the eve of the series. Australian bowling attack will be affected heavily with the absence of Lee in the first test match which going to start on Wednesday.

Lee said. “I’m extremely disappointed but it’s not the end of the world. I’ve worked so hard to get fit again so this is very disappointing. But I couldn’t Jeopardise the team effort by going out there less 100 percent fit. I’m gutted that I won’t be there for that first Test match. But I’ll find a way to bounce back. I’ve gotten back from five ankle surgeries so I’m sure one little muscle strain won’t keep me out for too long”.

It gives somebody else in our team an opportunity. We’ve got a very strong bowling attack here. The guys did the job in South Africa while I wasn’t there. We’ve got a great bunch of guys, guys who are willing to go out there and do the hard work. I’ve got the utmost confidence in the guys that they can do the job out there.

Lee, Australia’s most senior bowler with 310 wickets from 76 Tests, only recently returned to action after undergoing foot and ankle surgery following the Boxing Day Test against South Africa. Lee one can only hope that Australia can do well without him. He’s got a natural flair that no other fast bowler possesses. The tour matches against Sussex and England Lions were his first outings outside of Twenty20 competition this year, and his display in Worcester last week had prompted many to feel that he was nearing peak form. Lee’s injury is a blow to Australia, but England’s chances of winning are still not improved.

Lee was the only bowler able to summon significant movement in the tour game and his absence will intensify the pressure on Mitchell Johnson to lead the attack. He’s a fantastic competitor and an amazing bowler. We’ve all seen how he’s bowled in the last couple of games. He’s a huge, huge, huge player for Australia. Michael Clarke, Lee’s Australian team-mate, expressed sympathy for his colleague. “He’s worked really hard over the last 12 months to get back,” he said. “I only found out this morning that he was having the scans, so it came as a bit of a surprise to me. The most important thing is to get Brett as fit as possible.

England batsman Kevin Petersen said the Australians wouldn’t be the same without Lee. “He is a huge, huge, huge player for Australia,” he said. “He brings experience in the dressing room and also the intimidation he has on batsmen around the world because he has been the fastest bowler in the world. He has got that intimidating factor about him. It is a huge, huge, huge loss to them if he doesn’t play.

I still see myself as playing a major role for Australia through the end part of the series, depending on how things go, said Lee. I’ve got a couple of weeks to get things right and maybe when we get to London for the second Test I’ll have it rescanned. But it’s a day-by-day thing and I won’t be playing unless I’m 100% fit.

Without lee Ashes will be more interesting and I am sure it will going to benefit England for sure. You can watch The Ashes 2009 Live here on this site.
